web apps like google docs....hmmmm

while i think applications like google docs have their place i dont think we could ever go as far to say they could completely replace microsoft word or office tools. while it is convenient to have documents you can share and edit on a server, alot of writing is not something that should be on such an unsecure line ilke a server. take for example unique ground breaking research of some sort. as a historian i would not want to put my research up on a network that could be accessed by hacking. i just would not feel comfortable doing that. also if teh internet went down it would be impossible to access these documents as well,. simple technological mishaps could cause serious problems for people if all their work was based on servers. like i said while it is handy for some instances and class discussions, i dont think it has the practicality that microsoft word has.
